Freebie Friday: Massage Sessions from Appalachian Therapeutic Bodyworks
July 11, 2008
Ladies and gentlemen (dads can enter, too!), have I got a treat for you! Barry Marshall, of Appalachian Therapeutic Bodyworks, has offered two 1-hour bodywork sessions for two lucky Mom Squad readers! Barry is married to Mom Squad reader Lee Marshall, with the Children’s Council of Watauga County. I have a session this weekend there, and I can’t wait!
Appalachian Therapeutic Bodyworks is located in the historic Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove. You can visit the website, or call 828-964-0869 for more information and directions.
I’ll let Barry introduce himself and his practice in his own words:
Hi, my name is Barry Marshall and I am the owner/operator of Appalachian Therapeutic Bodyworks. I have lived in Watauga County my whole life. I have been married to the same wonderful woman for the last 20 years, and we have one beautiful daughter. I was first introduced to the manual healing arts though the practice of martial arts. My first training was in acupressure for martial art injuries; acupressure is based on the same principles as acupuncture. I went on to complete a three year apprenticeship program in Chinese medicine at Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine. I continued my education at Caldwell Community College where I graduated from a 579 hour Massage Therapy program. I received my license to practice Massage and Bodywork in North Carolina in August 2007; I am also nationally certified in massage therapy. I have expanded my training though continuing education in Trigger Point Therapy, Tuina (Chinese medical massage), and Myoskeletal Alignment Technique.
I chose to use the term “bodywork” instead of the more common term “massage” for my services for several reasons, the most important being that I wanted to emphasize the clinical focus in my work. There are many types of massage available; some are more focused on relaxation and/or wellness and some have a more clinical focus. Because of my background in Chinese medicine I am more clinically focused, which is why I do not offer some of the more relaxation-based types of massage.
What can I expect at my session?
When you first arrive there will be some paperwork to fill out, so it is better to arrive a few minutes early if you can. After the paperwork is completed a health history will be taken. I will then perform a five-minute assessment to help develop a treatment plan. You will be asked to remove your shoes, socks, and all jewelry and you will lie on the table. All work is done with the client fully dressed, but you should dress comfortably and appropriately. The exact techniques used will depend on the results of your assessment. After a session of bodywork you should feel more relaxed and maybe sleepy, so take your time in getting off of the table and make sure you are completely awake before driving. Be sure to drink plenty of water after a session to help flush out any toxins that may have been released from the bodywork.
To enter this contest, leave a comment here saying if you’ve ever had a body work session, and what you thought about it.

I have had several massages! However, since I moved here I have not found someone. I suffered from a severe headache for several months that doctors did all types of testing on, only to find out they had no idea what was wrong with me. So I went and had my first massage …..and the headache was GONE!!!!!!! I think that should explain how I feel about massage! It is a wonderful way to help your body, it is not a pampering event it is truly a stress reliever!! Maybe that’s what God means when He says lay hands on someone:)

Oh yeah, a comment about massages. I have received massage therapy before to head off migraines when they are approaching. Works every time. I leave feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, connected and even a little taller. I will give Therapeutic bodyworks a try since you put it on your site.
