Tonight, May 27 9:30am - 1:00 pm Buckeye Recreation Center will host a community health fair sponsored by the Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation, APPRHS, and Watauga County Healthy Carolinian’s.

The event will feature a Health Fair with free screenings, educational information, and diagnostic testing from 9:30-11:30am. All of the health fair activities will be free! From 11:30am-1:00pm an informational and educational luncheon with a guest speaker discussing heart health will be held. The luncheon will be $5 and will include a healthy lunch. Please register with the Buckeye Recreation Center Staff by May 22nd to secure your seat at the luncheon. This is a community event and is open to the publc, regardless of where you are from.

5:00 PM Perkinsville Baptist will host an Adoption Fundraiser for the Klears, a local couple who is  going over to China on June 6th to pick up their little girl, currently 18 months old.  They’ll be having a spaghetti dinner at the church.

Community Pasta Dinner In preparation for the A Cool 5 race,

The Buckeye Recreation Center will be hosting a Community Pasta Dinner on Friday, June 5th. The pasta dinner will be $5 for all attendants. The pasta dinner will include delicious food in a fun, family environment. The event will also feature live music, inspirational guest speaker – Margaret Hagerty, games, and activities for the entire family to enjoy! All proceeds will benefit the construction of the new community playground. The pasta dinner will also serve as the registration deadline for the Biggest Loser Program and early packet pick-up for A Cool 5 participants.

7:30 AM  2nd Annual A Cool 5 Race

Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation will host the 2nd Annual A Cool 5 Race to benefit the construction of the new community playground. This year’s event will again feature a five mile run traversing beautiful Beech Mountain landscape providing breathtaking 360 degree views. There will also be a 1.5 mile fun run/walk option for those interested in a slower pace, less strenuous option. The race weekend festivities will begin with packet pick-up for racers at the Friday night Pasta Dinner. Race day activities start at 7:30am with day-of registration and packet pick-up. The five mile race will begin at 9:00am and the 1.5 mile fun run/walk will begin at 9:15am. Post-race festivities will include live music and a cook-out. Games and activities will also be available for the family. Early Registration will include your race entry, a wicking t-shirt, custom socks, goodie bag, and a post-race meal. Late registration will substitute a cotton t-shirt in place of the dry-fit wicking t’s. Registration is available online at www.ACool5.com, www.active.com, and www.offnrunning.com. 10 AM     Artist and mime extraordinaire Michael Cooper delights with a special Saturday morning Kids & Family performance at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock.

Michael Cooper is a “Poet of the Stage” — an eye-popping visual artist and a virtuoso mime whose exquisite performances combine breathtaking handcrafted masks, original stories of courage and wonder, outlandish stilt dancing, and a physical repertoire ranging from the madcap to the sublime. Cooper, whose programs have been hailed as “moving sculpture, will bring his one-man extravaganza Michael Cooper’s Masked Marvels to the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock for a special 10am kids & family performance on Saturday, June 13.

Ryan’s Rock ‘n Roll Run, 1 mile, 5K, 5 mile

The run was created last year in memory of Ryan Glenny to help raise money for Ewings Sarcoma cancer research. This year we decided to keep it local and we will be donating the money to help Will Dicus, who has been battling the same cancer for over 4 years now.  The run will be held on the greenway trail with the starting line just behind Boone Skatepark. We will have bands stationed along the run playing live music-hence the name Rock N Roll Run.  Runners/Joggers/Walkers/Crawlers are all encouraged to come out!  Entry Fee is $20 which includes a free T-Shirt.  For more Information visit www.ryansrocknrollrun.com/

Suite Surrender at the Hayes Performing Arts Center

It’s 1942, and the luxurious Palm Beach Royale Hotel is under siege as two of Hollywood’s biggest divas vie for the same suite. The hotel staff and the stars’ secretaries do all they can to keep Hollywood legends Claudia McFadden and Athena Sinclair from killing each other. Mistaken identities, overblown egos, double entendres, and one pampered lap dog all crash together in Florida playwright Michael McKeever’s show-business valentine to those hysterical old farces of the 30’s and 40’s. This Tony Award winner for Best Musical made its Broadway debut in 1960 with Dick Van Dyke, Chita Rivera and Charles Nelson Reilly. Now this tuneful, toe-tapping musical comedy inspired by Elvis Presley comes to Blowing Rock. The affectionate tale follows rock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie and the antics that precede a publicity stunt on The Ed Sullivan Show in which Conrad will kiss one lucky girl from Sweet Apple, Ohio, before being drafted into the Army.
